Exploring the real estate market in Portland, ME in the context of financial investment

Summer Mission: To learn as much as I can about finance and real estate to help determine what field I want to start my working career in.

My summer was separated into 3 parts.

  1. Finance research: I conducted due diligence on Hedge Funds, Private Equity, and Venture Capital. We spent most of our time looking at potential long and short investments. I was particularly interested in shorts and spent most of my time learning about hedging.
  2. Real estate research: I spent time exploring the real estate market in Portland, ME. We looked into current and potential investments, as well as what parts of the market are growing the fastest. Most of the investments we reviewed were multi-family properties.
  3. Improving technical and collaboration skills: I familiarized myself with several types of financial models. I also networked with many Bowdoin finance and real estate alumni. Several of the other interns were current Bowdoin students, so we worked together on every task that we were given.

Favorite part of the internship: Speaking with alumni. I was able to learn a lot this summer by simply making connections to people not only in finance and real estate, but alums in a variety of different fields that my employer was able to connect me with.

Internship funded by the CXD Internship Fund.
