Working at a Music Studio

By Frances Hornbostel ‘25
Navigating both the song-writing and production sides of music
Frances lies on the ground working on music on laptop.
This summer I...
  • Worked with an independent producer, Jack Obery, through the Prism Analog recording studio in Portland
  • Made demos of songs to prep for recording, strengthening skills in both Logic Pro X and Ableton Live DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations)
  • Wrote out tabs which improved my music theory understanding
  • Recorded 4 songs at Prism and Bowdoin, learning so much about the environment of recording, best practices, mixing, and the public side after release
  • Delved into lyric-writing through interviews/direct analysis of my favorite songs, wrote ~12 new songs
  • Networked and researched about music promotion and copyright laws + licenses
What did you learn about yourself? I much prefer Ableton, I like 8th notes to play to a click, and importantly that the writing side of things evoked more passion than the production side, though I had a blast learning how to navigate that space better. And it's empowering to be familiarized with the mechanics and the vocabulary of production/mixing/mastering steps to more effectively work to develop a song.

What were your favorite parts? I love recording harmony, writing the piano parts, learning from the wisdom of writers that inspire me, and practicing technical shortcuts and improving my proficiency and efficiency in these DAWs.
