Providing “extraordinary perspectives” to Maine's readership

Portland Monthly is Maine’s city magazine that aims to offer an “extraordinary perspective” on local events, businesses, personalities, and culture. The magazine aims to inform, intrigue, and entertain readers with everything from  celebrity interviews to restaurant reviews and short fiction.

This summer, I glimpsed all sides of editorial work: writing, interviewing, researching, editing, and taking pictures. A few major projects were a feature story about apprenticeships, two columns on cannabis businesses, and researched and wrote about yachts, art auctions, and lobsters.

Some takeaways about myself, the magazine business, and Maine from this summer:

  • Improved my interviewing skills — became more confident asking tough questions
  • Learned my way around Portland dropping off magazines
  • Worked on becoming a much more concise, engaging writer
  • Talked to Mainers of all sorts—from state representatives to oyster farmers
