Curating an Exhibit
By Isabella Egwuonwu '24As the Curatorial Intern at Magenta Plains Gallery, I was in charge of the curation and recruitment of artists for the summer 2023 exhibition NBAS Oil, Mixed Media, & Sculpture. I spent majority of my time reaching out to artists in the tri-state area, planning and recording interviews, creating dossiers and press kits for each of the artists in the exhibition, and presenting my findings to my team. I researched museums and galleries across the country and connected artists with new opportunities.
I used ArtLogic extensively for managing contacts in the art world, adding key notes from meetings I attended and updating their interests from articles I read. I suggested ways to streamline out of date practices and came up with new solutions to unsolved problems.
Press Kits were an essential part of my job, as I would read articles from sites like The New York Times, ArtNet, & ArtForum, consolidate my findings of praise and congratulations for these artists and formatted it into a document that was distributed during the opening.
I learned the importance of maintaining my organization, how to delegate, and when to ask questions. I also learned how to complete tasks as efficiently as possible without compromising the quality of my work. I was able to pick up so many useful skills along with strengthening the skills I already had. I’ve become more confident, reliable, and well balanced. I’m very excited to say that after my internship, that I wish to continue my work in the arts in NYC.
My favorite part about this summer was getting to meet new artists, visit their studios, and organize and present their life’s work in a way that everyone could see and enjoy. Through my summer sublet, whom I rented from a fellow Bowdoin grad, I was able to visit many art museums, attend Thursday night gallery openings in Chelsea, and really immerse myself in the art scene in New York City.
Internship funded by the Delta Sigma/Delta Upsilon Activities Fund.
