Working for Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Storer
By Sean Groenstein ‘24Summer 2023 I served as intern to Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Storer, a member of the Wyoming State Legislature representing Housing District 23. Her focus includes protecting women’s healthcare opportunities, improving school facilities, and combating rising property taxes. As one of the only democratic representatives in the entire state, Storer takes on a difficult role in the legislature. She spends considerable time battling the Wyoming Freedom Caucus, a popular new wave of far-right legislators, while also figuring out how to compromise with and elect more moderate ‘Wyoming Caucus’ Republicans.
Under Storer, I researched current issues to help inform her work and served as personal assistant while she traveled to three special interim committee meetings across the state and during numerous meetings with important constituents, donors, lobbyists, and politicians. Some notable topics researched include, the viability of a proposed state fishing permit, leases on a contentious local property of state trust land, classifications of property tax in other states, and the finances of Wyoming PACs.
As a political theory concentrator in the Government Department at Bowdoin, I hoped this internship would introduce me to the more practical side of politics. The internship accomplished exactly what I’d hoped and was pleasantly surprised by the extent my study of theory made contemporary policy issues all the more fascinating. My favorite part of the job was getting the chance to talk with important politicians and see some of the hiccups in our political system.
Internship funded by the Peter Buck Internship Fund.
