Protecting Land, Water, and Wildlife Habitats
By Chloë Sheahan ‘26Blue Hill Heritage Trust is a non-profit land conservation organization that protects land, water, and wildlife habitat on the greater Blue Hill Peninsula and works with and educates the community on its mission.
While interning with Blue Hill Heritage Trust (BHHT) I spent a lot of time stewarding the land. I used tools to maintain and build trails, monitored land easements and created legal documents for new easements, helped to inventory trees in forest plots, and monitored wetland species regrowth. I worked in development; I wrote a grant for an accessible trail that will be built this fall and helped to create donor events. And I worked in outreach; I helped with many outreach events and my favorites were teaching about nature at summer camps and designing our own event which was a full moon hike up a mountain.
I gained many new skills in each of these areas from my time at BHHT, as well as a Wilderness First Aid certification and attending chainsaw training. I will use these skills for the rest of my life, and I can’t imagine where else I would have been able to do this. I learned so much about what I can do and who I want to be during this internship, and I’m excited to continue this work in my studies at Bowdoin.
Internship funded by the Preston Public Interest Career fund.
