Treating Anxiety Disorders
By Julia DeLuca ‘25This summer I interned at Advanced Therapeutic Solutions for Anxiety (ATSA) under the supervision of Dr. Carmen Lynas. ATSA is a private practice in Oak Brook, Illinois that specializes in anxiety disorders, specifically selective mutism. The organization’s motto is “Use Your Brave!” which highlights the focus of their treatment, being comfortable being uncomfortable. ATSA’s mission is to help their patients understand that they are capable of doing hard things and facing their fears.
As an intern this summer, most of my work revolved around preparing for Adventure Camp (AC), a five-day intensive treatment program for children with selective mutism. I completed projects such as doing inventory of the materials needed for camp, creating a slideshow of photos and videos from the camp, managing Professional Development sessions, writing camper stories, and serving as a point of contact for four of the campers’ parents. The most rewarding part of the internship was serving as a confederate in psychotherapy sessions. As a confederate, I served as an exposure tool (in exposure therapy) and was able to practice using different evidence-based therapeutic techniques.
Working as an intern at ATSA has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally. Through speaking with experts in the field and observing the daily proceedings of a private practice I was able to solidify my desire to attend graduate school after Bowdoin and earn my P.h.D. in clinical psychology. On a personal level, I was able to explore a new city and meet new people. Additionally, working with six other interns taught me how to create group success by playing to each group member’s strengths. I enjoyed being in an environment where I was surrounded by people with the same passion for psychology that I have. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity.
Internship funded by the CXD Internship Fund.
