Summer Fellow
By Thea Aslanian '23The Farmlink Project is a student-founded non-profit fighting food waste, climate change, and hunger by connecting farmers to food relief organizations across the United States. Since the organization was founded in 2019, they have rescued more than 70 million pounds of surplus from farms, serving over 58 million meals.
As a part of the sustainability team at Farmlink, I worked to research and develop their carbon offset program. I worked primarily on project development, calculating the carbon impact of food being saved from landfill and redirected to communities in need. My specialty in this calculation was the baseline scenario: the quantity of green house gas that would have been released had the produce gone to its original destination. I also designed and created printed cards which I sold to raise money for Farmlink and spread awareness about food loss and waste.
I really enjoyed learning about the carbon offset market, with all its current flaws, and its potential to support new projects to help combat climate change. This summer solidified my interest in pursuing a career in sustainability.
