PrMEIR Scholars Summer Intensive Program Intern
By David Garcia ‘25The mission of the Program for Medical Education Innovations & Research (PrMEIR) is to advance medical education scholarship and institute best practices for patient-centered, evidence-based medical education.
My research as an intern this summer was centered around the medical education of physicians and healthcare professionals. As an intern, the team and I worked at NYU Langone Health on Personal Identity Essays (PIEs) completed by residents at NYU Grossman School of Medicine for professional development. We used a qualitative research coding program called Dedoose to create a shared mental model that could be used to build a professional development curriculum in the future for residents.
I was also given the opportunity to shadow Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) at NYU Grossman. There, I was able to see first-hand how residents solve patients’ problems and get evaluated on their performances, allowing me to get a better sense of what makes an effective doctor.
This internship allowed me to take a step into the field of medicine from the lens of education. I found this experience invaluable as I learned how medical education is precisely crafted to prepare residents for their medical careers, as chances are, I’ll be in their shoes soon enough.
