This summer, I worked for Mike Jerome at one of his restaurants in Brunswick, FatBoy Drive-In. Fat Boy Drive-In was established in 1955 as a 50’s style drive-in diner. Fat Boy Drive-In’s mission is to keep the nostalgic 50’s aesthetic many have cherished over the years. While attempting to honor time held traditions, Fat Boy also strives to progress to current and future times by catering to many dietary restrictions, offering cashless payments, and hosting annual fundraisers to give back to the community.

My role at FatBoy’s was to run the day-to-day business as a manager. This meant I had to problem solve quickly, create the weekly schedule, learn to cook, and manage employees. I was also the events coordinator, so I had to work with partners and our non-profit sponsors to create fundraising events. The two projects I worked on were the Big Brothers, Big Sisters BBQ, and our annual Sockhop event. The BBQ was a chance to have Bigs and Littles mingle and get to know each other better. The Sockhop event was our largest fundraiser for the Brunswick School Departments Student Assistance Fund, and we raised over $300 for the fund.

I learned how much work, planning, and coordination it takes to plan a fundraising event, especially a public event for a business. I picked up many broad skills that will help me in any industry, non-profit or restaurant environment in the future. I specifically learned how to market, create graphic designs for marketing, and the perseverance to reach out to community members and vendors.
