Summer Intern
By Catherine Crouch ‘23This summer I interned at Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance (MWPA), a nonprofit that brings together Maine writers, editors, publishers, and literary professionals to sharpen their craft, create community, celebrate great writing, and lift the state’s literary culture.
Though I had a few consistent tasks throughout the summer—helping to write the weekly newsletter, managing memberships, and beginning an archival project to digitize decades of MWPA’s physical records—I was surprised by the ever-changing nature of nonprofit work, and I found myself doing new things every day. I learned how to write press releases, I took a class on grant writing, and I spent more and more time each week assisting with the planning of the first-ever Maine Literary Festival this October.
I’m very grateful to have had this internship—I really felt my love of literature come alive, and I was lucky to experience firsthand the unifying power stories can have on a people. It was incredibly fulfilling to work with and for other writers and to be welcomed into a growing community of storytellers who truly value the literary arts.
