Oakland Roots SC Operations Intern
By Aidan Schraeder '22
The Oakland Roots SC are a new soccer club to the USL Championship, professional soccer league just below the MLS. Unlike other teams “Oakland Roots Sports Club seeks to harness the magic of Oakland and the power of sport as a force for social good. Whether on the pitch, in the stands, or within the community, Oakland Roots will represent our one-of-a-kind city with passion, pride, and commitment to all things Oakland. Player by player. Supporter by supporter. Resident by resident. One day at a time. One game at a time. This is about Oakland first, always.”
During my time with the Roots, I helped plan and execute game days, including pack lists, field maps, logistics, and run of show. Additionally, I helped manage the Covid-19 test results for our First Team and 51O academy squads to ensure protocols were enforced and followed. For game days I was able help as visiting team liaison coordinating all needs and accommodations were met while in town.
Working for the Roots confirmed my desire to stay in the world of sports. I even have begun to look at graduate programs after being introduced to alums of the USF Sport Management program. The best part of the internship was all the new challenges daily, making each day different from one another. Since this was the teams first year in the USL Championship, I was able to work directly with the COO on crisis management.
A quick thank you is needed for all the amazing mentors and staff that welcomed me and showed me what Oakland is truly about.
This internship was funded by the Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund.
