Legal Intern
By Tiffany Delgado '23Through my internship with the Maine Judicial Courts, I was able to gain a holistic view of the state and local judicial system. By interning with a wide variety of professionals in specialties ranging from legal mediation in family matters to working with Portland PD to solve cold cases, I gained a comprehensive understanding of how the judicial courts operate.
During the summer, I spent three days a week shadowing Judge Barbara Raimondi and Attorney Jennifer Davis (‘92). On the other two days I assisted various experts such as Portland DA John Sahrbeck, Barry Koehler (CADRES Mediation), Tim Robbins (Kids First Mediation), Linsey Ruhl (Pine Tree Legal), Through These Doors Advocacy, Judge Joseph Field, and Magistrate Tracie Adamson.
Although I have worked on different projects throughout the summer, my most intensive and informative one was assisting in legal council for a criminal trial. As an aspiring lawyer, it was incredibly beneficial to assist Attorney Davis with constructing and adapting her criminal defense case. With her as my mentor, I learned new tactics to draft a persuasive Cross Examination and was exposed to a variety of different approaches to legal presentation. She taught me how to use my established skills in public speaking and detail-oriented analysis to my advantage in legal proceedings. Both this internship and Attorney Davis have further solidified that public defense is a career I would not only be successful in, but one I would find extremely fulfilling.
This internship was funded by the Career Readiness Fund provided by Mr. Robert J. Whelan ‘83.
