At Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center this summer, I was a remote intern with the Community Migrant Advocacy Program (CMAP). I worked alongside attorneys, accredited representatives, paralegals, law students and other undergraduate interns to provide accessible legal aid to low-income migrants at the U.S.-Mexico Border.

In CMAP, we focused on the needs of our non-detained clients from the retainer agreement to the closing letter, including applications for immigration relief: DACA, EAD, VAWA, U-Visa, T-Visa, residency and citizenship. While I was 2,500 miles away, I could still help by translating documents, conducting intake interviews, calling clients and writing cover letters to assist attorneys/accredited representatives with case development.  Working with LAIAC solidified my career goals in immigration advocacy, and I’ve learned so much about effective communication, connection and language.

This internship was funded by the Preston Public Interest Career Fund.
