Promoting the welfare of wild avian populations through rehabilitation, education, and research

During my summer internship at Alaska Raptor Center (ARC) in Sitka, AK, I gained practical experience with wild avian rehabilitation. ARC is a non-profit in Sitka, AK that promotes welfare of wild avian populations through rehabilitation, education, and research.

My internship had tasks spanning:

  • Clinical work with more than a dozen bird species–from Song Sparrows to Bald Eagles–with diverse medical problems
  • Basic avian husbandry including preparing species-appropriate diets, creating enrichment, and providing appropriate living spaces for birds
  • Basic training and handling of glove-trained raptors

Clinical work was my favorite aspect and the most challenging. I was lucky enough to be able to observe and participate in the problem-solving aspects of triage, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

The experience furthered my interest in a career as a veterinarian or field biologist.
