Portland Press Herald News Intern

Developing relationships with sources across a broad array of fields.
I worked as the news intern at the Portland Press Herald, Maine’s largest newspaper. I covered a wide range of subjects from Portland City Hall, to Maine’s first fatal shark attack, to the effects of the Postmaster General’s new regulations on postal service in Maine.
I loved taking a subject I knew little about—restaurant permitting, or internet privacy laws—and in researching whatever I was assigned to write, I could become a sort of “micro-expert” on a given subject.
I learned to read the dynamics of the city council, cultivated my own sources in the USPS, and developed relationships with sources across a broad array of fields. While I was doing this, I discovered that I do in fact love journalism.
