Child Justice, Inc. Legal Assistant

Understanding the benefits and challenges of non-profit legal work.

Child Justice, Inc. (CJI) is a nonprofit law firm in Silver Spring, Maryland that represents children and their protective parents in family law cases. Its mission is to protect children from abusive caretakers.

I worked for CJI as a Legal Assistant. Because CJI is a small nonprofit, I was able to work directly with the founder/director, as well as the attorneys.

One thing I loved about working for CJI was that I got to work on a huge variety of different projects:

An extensive pamphlet for attorneys describing different forms of technological abuse, related law & jurisprudence, and how to “prove” that technological abuse has taken place;

An infographic about Autism Spectrum Disorder and family Law; A procedural manual describing standardized procedures for client intake and case management (for the use of present employees and the education of future interns);

New, trauma-informed “scripts” for client interviews and intake forms; and even a ”worksheet” for the Board of CJI, to help them engage in strategic planning as CJI grows and adjusts its mission.

Overall, I had a fantastic experience. This internship allowed me to research specific areas of law, as well as better understand the benefits and challenges of non-profit legal work.
