Student Awards

The Classics department awards prizes to sophomore, junior, and senior students each spring.

Hannibal Hamlin Emery Latin Prize

The Hannibal Hamlin Emery Latin Prize (since 1922), established in honor of her uncle, Hannibal Hamlin Emery, class of 1874, by Persis E. Mason. The Prize is awarded annually to the member of the junior or senior class for proficiency in Latin.

Nathan Goold Prize

The Nathan Goold Prize (since 1922), by Abba Goold Woolson, of Portland, in memory of her grandfather. The Prize is awarded annually to that member of the senior class who has, throughout the college course, attained the highest standing in Greek and Latin studies.

Sewall Greek Prize

The Sewall Greek Prize (since 1879), given by Jotham Bradbury Sewall, class of 1848, S.T.D. 1902, who was formerly the Professor of Greek at Bowdoin. The Prize is awarded annually to the member of the sophomore class who sustains the best examination in Greek.
