Public Notice of Comprehensive Evaluation

Bowdoin College will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit from November 1–4, 2026, by a team representing the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).

The New England Commission of Higher Education is a regional accrediting commission recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Institutional accreditation by NECHE is voluntary and applies to the College as a whole. The Commission accredits approximately 220 colleges and universities in the United States and American-style institutions overseas.

Bowdoin College has been accredited by NECHE (formerly the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, NEASC) since 1929. The College was last reviewed through a comprehensive evaluation in 2017. Its accreditation encompasses the entire institution.

Over the past year and a half, Bowdoin College has engaged in a comprehensive self-study addressing NECHE's Standards for Accreditation. During the evaluation visit, the peer review team will assess the self-study, gather additional evidence regarding the College's educational quality and institutional effectiveness, and determine the extent to which Bowdoin meets the Commission's Standards for Accreditation. Following the visit, the evaluation team will make a recommendation to the Commission regarding the College's accreditation. The Commission itself will make the final accreditation decision after completing its review process.

The Commission cannot settle disputes between individuals and institutions, including those involving faculty, students, administrators, or other parties. Comments will not be treated as confidential and must include the name, address, and telephone number of the person submitting the comment.

Public comments must be received by November 4, 2026. The Commission cannot guarantee that comments received after that date will be considered.
