Frank H. Goodyear, Ph.D., is Co-Director of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. He was previously Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. He is the author of ten peer-reviewed scholarly essays and five books: Red Cloud: Photographs of a Lakota Chief (University of Nebraska Press, 2003); Zaida Ben- Yusuf: New York Portrait Photographer (Merrell, 2008); Faces of the Frontier: Photographic Portraits from the American West, 1845-1924 (University of Oklahoma Press, 2009); A President in Yellowstone: The F. Jay Haynes Photographic Album of Chester Arthur’s 1883 Expedition (University of Oklahoma Press, 2013); and, with Joel Dinerstein, American Cool (Prestel, 2014). He is currently working on two new research projects: a book on Theodore Roosevelt’s 1909-10 scientific expedition to British East Africa (Smithsonian Books, 2017) and a study of Winslow Homer’s interest in photography.
