THRIVE (September 25, 2017)
September 25, 2017 by Office of the President
To students, faculty, and staff,
I write to announce an exciting and generous gift of $5 million dollars from alumnus Reed Hastings ’83 that will allow the College to develop a program that will substantially transform the experience of low-income students, first-generation students, and those students traditionally underrepresented at Bowdoin. With these funds, the College will provide academic support and skills and assistance with the challenges of navigating Bowdoin to talented students from underserved backgrounds. As you will read in the announcement now posted to the Bowdoin website, the essential goals of the program—to be known as THRIVE—are to promote exceptionally high engagement by these students with all the College has to offer and to ensure their success as they move toward graduation and beyond.
This gift from Reed—who, as you know, is cofounder and CEO of Netflix—underscores his longstanding commitment to education and education reform. We are tremendously grateful for his support and for his confidence in the ability of our College to change lives.
Additional information about THRIVE will be available in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, I know you join me in thanking Reed for making this program possible for our students and for his commitment to Bowdoin.
