I Do Declare! Sophomores Celebrate Their Field(s) of Choice
By Rebecca GoldfineEach year on Declaration Day, when sophomores officially select their majors and minors, Bowdoin throws a well-deserved party for the second-year students, with ice cream, music, sticky notes, and posters that make good selfie backdrops.
After three semesters of sampling classes across the curriculum, sophomores in February are asked to make a big decision about what field of study they most want to deeply engage.
Starting in 2019, the Office of Student Activities began declaring "Declaration Day" a Bowdoin holiday, to be celebrated in Morrell Lounge with treats and music. Associate Director of Student Activities Silvia Lorrain said such a big moment in a student's life should be met with an equally big hurrah.
When students enter the lounge, they're encouraged to sign their names on sticky notes to tack onto major posters.
The posters remain on the Union walls for several days, giving sophomores a chance to check out their new academic cohort.
