Summer at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.

Summer is in full swing here in Maine. When you are not at the beach or in the mountains, please join us at the Museum of Art, where a series of terrific exhibitions is now on view. And be sure to attend some of the public programs that are on tap in August. In addition to the daily tour at 2 p.m. by the Museum’s talented summer interns, we hope that you might join us on August 4 when Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, the Anthony and Lulu Wang Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, speaks about her aunt Barbara Cooney, the celebrated children’s book author and illustrator whose work is being showcased this summer in a special exhibition. Also, we hope to see you on August 12 when we host our second annual “Night at the Museum” event.

Enjoy refreshments on the steps of the Museum and take a tour of This Is a Portrait If I Say So: Identity in American Art, 1912 to Today, with the exhibition’s three curators, Anne Collins Goodyear, Kathleen Merrill Campagnolo, and Jonathan Frederick Walz.

Finally on August 16, Jonathan Frederick Walz, catalogue essayist and Director of Curatorial Affairs & Curator of American Art at the Columbus Museum, Columbus, Georgia, leads a discussion of portraiture abstraction in the early twentieth century in the exhibition This Is a Portrait If I Say So: Identity in American Art, 1912 to Today.
