Eligibility

We are looking for students of underrepresented backgrounds with an intent to apply to graduate school and obtain a PhD in a MMUF designated field.

The following criteria are used in selecting participants for MMUF:

  • MMUF is open to sophomores who identify as African American/Black, Latinx, and Native American, as well as other students with a demonstrated commitment to the goals of the program and to eradicating racial disparities in higher education
  • Intent to apply to graduate school and pursue a teaching career at the college/university level
  • Academic promise
  • Grade point average of 3.0 or above in the field of interest
  • Well-articulated research proposal
  • Availability and commitment to participate fully and enthusiastically in all aspects of the fellowship (including full-time over two summers). Tentative dates for the 2023 MMUF summer research training program for rising juniors are June 23 through July 29.
  • Serious interest in pursuing a PhD in one of the following MMUF designated fields: anthropology and archeology, area/cultural/ethnic/gender studies, art history, classics, geography and population studies, English, film and media studies (theoretical focus), foreign languages and literatures, linguistics, history, musicology, ethnomusicology and music theory, literature, performance studies (theoretical focus), philosophy, political theory, religion and theology, sociology, theater (non-performance), Interdisciplinary Studies will be approved case by case.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals of MMUF: to increase the number of faculty from historically underrepresented groups, as well as to address the consequences of these racial disparities for the educational system itself and for the larger society it serves. Examples of such commitment might include relevant undergraduate research; a strong record of tutoring students from underrepresented groups; sustained mentoring of children from such groups; or other forms of community service/leadership activities.
  • Status as a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, DACA or undocumented.
