The Thorndike Oak Toast Tradition

By Bowdoin News

The Thorndike Oak Toast is a longstanding Bowdoin tradition honoring George Thorndike, Class of 1806, commemorating the senior class transitioning from students to alumni. This year's toast was held May 22, 2023, during the senior class’s commencing dinner.

The Thorndike Oak Fund was established by David Thorndike ‘46 in memory of George Thorndike, Class of 1806, a member of Bowdoin’s first graduating class. The endowed fund supports the first-year convening and commencing dinners.

President Clayton Rose joined Senior Class Engagement Campaign (SCEC) leaders Jayna Robotham ’23, Khushi Patel ’23, Katharine Barrett ’23, and Edwin Sanchez Huizar ’23 in delivering remarks about what it means to support Bowdoin after graduation, the significant impact alumni have on the College, and the various ways in which they may stay engaged.

“As we prepare to leave Bowdoin, it’s important to remember that these connections do not end here,” said Patel. “We are now part of a greater alumni network, a community that extends beyond this campus and into the world.”

Now in its twelfth year, the SCEC educates seniors about the ways to support the College as alumni–from making gifts to the Alumni Fund, to volunteering with Admissions or CXD, to staying connected to their peers or meeting fellow Polar Bears where they land after graduation.
