Mission and Vision

Women in Technology (WIT) at Bowdoin is an inclusive and collaborative organization for individuals whose job is technology facing, and who desire a mechanism and forum for discussion, support, training, and the development of skills to further their careers as information professionals and leaders in higher education. Woman-identifying staff and allies working with technology and data management span across almost every department at Bowdoin including the library, museums, finance, development, student services, our academic departments, institutional research, building operations, IT and many more.

Our program is designed and powered by women and provides vital support, advocacy, and developmental opportunities intended to address the historical gaps in demographics in technology-based careers. We strive to be open and inclusive, with a common goal of nurturing an expanded presence of women and people who wish to be present and recognized in the growing technology world.

Each year we sponsor a medley of programming and networking opportunities for our colleagues on a variety of topics. These include conversations, guest speakers, workshops, conference convenings and other engagement opportunities on topics such as designing your life, inclusive leadership, emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and self-care. We are beginning the 2025-26 season with a new “Tech Showcase” program intended to introduce and discuss the wide variety of software and technology options that are currently available at Bowdoin, with live demonstrations and discussions of how to utilize and apply these technologies in a variety of different ways. We will also continue our professional development series with challenging and interactive sessions intended to help us grow in our technical and professional lives.

WIT at Bowdoin hopes to influence and guide its participants in a rich and lasting way in the hopes of building great technology capabilities at Bowdoin, along with career and leadership opportunities to women in technology in the larger higher education community. We do this with the genuine support of our allies from diverse genders, ethnicities, and professional backgrounds within and outside the Bowdoin community.
