Batool Khattab earned her BA in English Literature (Drama), as well as her MA and PhD, from the Faculty of Al-Alsun (Languages), Department of English, at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Khattab has extensive experience teaching Arabic and English as foreign languages in both Egypt and the United States. Her research focuses on the significance of space and memory in theater performance, post-Egyptian revolution street theater, cross-cultural theater, second language pedagogy, and the role of culture in second language acquisition.

Dr. Khattab taught, supervised, and administered placement and exit exams at the Middlebury Arabic Summer Language School from 2008 to 2021. She also participated in the training and supervision of junior faculty at the program. Since 2022, she has been an active member of the Search Committee for the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA).

Before joining Bowdoin College in 2018, Dr. Khattab taught Arabic Studies at Williams College, where she helped establish the Arabic Program, which grew from a critical language offering into a robust department with an established major. She has also taught Arabic language and culture at Middlebury College and Tufts University.

At Bowdoin, Dr. Khattab teaches all levels of Arabic language and culture. She is currently developing a fourth-year Arabic curriculum with a range of offerings, including Contemporary Arab Culture(s), Readings in Diplomacy and Current World Politics, and Introduction to Arabic Theater(s). She has taught courses in Modern Arabic Standard (MSA) and has offered an introductory course on the Egyptian Arabic dialect.
