Extended Thanksgiving Break (November 4, 2021)

To our Bowdoin students,

These last twenty months have required you to contend with significant and persistent challenges that have fundamentally altered regular aspects of your lives. The emotional toll from this on everyone has been significant, and Theo’s death is a tragedy that has added great sadness on top of these challenges.

We are writing to let you know that we are canceling classes on the Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week to allow a full week to rest, recharge, and spend time with family and friends and those who support us. Classes will begin again on Monday, November 29. This is a move inspired by a proposal from the BSG at the end of last year for a “Polar Pause,” which we had been considering.

While classes will not be held, the College will remain open on Monday, November, 22, and Tuesday, November 23. Students who wish to leave campus for the full week may do so after classes on Friday, November 19. Students who wish to stay on campus—or who are unable to revise their travel plans—will have full access to dining, the library, the Smith Union, and all other facilities on Monday, November 22, and Tuesday, November 23, and the Thanksgiving break will start for faculty and staff as previously scheduled on Wednesday, November 24, at 8:00 a.m.

Our extraordinary Dining Service will kick things off on Thursday, November 18, with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for students in Moulton (5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) and Thorne (5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.). And Res Life will be back in touch with revised details for those students who will had previously planned to be on campus throughout the break.

We know you join us in great thanks to our faculty for adjusting their schedules and to our staff who support all that we do on campus.

Please make plans to rest, relax, visit with family and friends, and take care of yourselves in this very demanding and difficult period.

Be well and take care,

Clayton Rose
