Message to Faculty and Staff—Town Hall (May 22, 2020)

To my faculty and staff colleagues,

Tomorrow we will confer degrees on our newest graduates. The act of awarding those degrees makes this Bowdoin's 215th Commencement, even though it will be unlike any in our history—the formal ceremony has been postponed until next year.
Although we will not be together on the Quad with the senior class, we will honor and celebrate their achievements tomorrow and look forward to welcoming them back to campus next spring. Tomorrow’s celebration gets underway with a slideshow at 12:45 p.m., and the formal program begins at 1:00 p.m. Many of you had a hand in pulling this celebration together or provided videos and photographs—thank you. I hope you will all be able to participate tomorrow by joining us at bowdoin.edu/live or on Bowdoin’s Facebook page.

As the work continues on planning for the fall, I would like another opportunity to be with you virtually to answer your questions and to hear what’s on your mind. I’ll do this next Wednesday, May 27, in a Zoom town hall for faculty and staff from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. The login information appears below. You may send your thoughts and questions ahead of time to townhallquestions@bowdoin.edu, or you can submit them live during the town hall.

I know there have been some questions about how our endowment works. I have attached a paper we developed on the endowment that was given to alumni and parents last year in the run-up to the From Here campaign launch. I thought it might provide some useful background, and I would be happy to take questions on this at the town hall. In addition, sometime in July, we will organize a webinar on the financial model of the College, including how the endowment fits in.

I hope you will enjoy a well-earned break and the Maine outdoors this weekend. Thank you again for everything you do for one another and for our College.

All the best,

Clayton
