Message to the Bowdoin Community—2021 Honorary Degree Recipients (December 16, 2020)

To the Bowdoin community,

Today, as final exams begin and the end of the fall semester draws near, we are announcing publicly that the College will bestow honorary degrees to four outstanding individuals at our 216th Commencement exercises on Saturday, May 29, 2021, as we also honor the achievements of the Class of 2021.
This year’s honorary degree recipients, approved unanimously by the board of trustees, include:

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID)

William Harbour, renowned civil rights activist and Freedom Rider (to be presented posthumously)

DeRay Mckesson ’07, civil rights activist and Campaign Zero cofounder

Dr. Jessica Meir, Maine-born NASA astronaut, marine biologist, and physiologist

You may read more about these extraordinary individuals on the Bowdoin website. I am grateful to the members of the Subcommittee on Honors of the board of trustees for their work in assembling such an inspirational slate of honorands for the College.

Thank you for everything you have done to take care of one another and to bring the semester to a successful close.

I hope you have a safe and peaceful holiday season.

All the best,
