Answering a call for help from hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, Nadia Celis—associate professor of Romance languages and literatures and director of the Latin American studies program—is using Bowdoin’s telepresence room to teach college students on the island without leaving campus.

The telestreamed class allows university students in Puerto Rico to complete their semesters despite the current and ongoing closure of their institutions.

With her literature course, A Body of One’s Own: Caribbean and Latina Writers, Celis is helping Puerto Rican students fulfill the forty-five classroom hours required to earn three college credits alongside, if virtually, their Bowdoin College peers.

“My students are quite excited about the opportunity to both help those in need and to share their learning experience with native speakers of Spanish who can contribute different perspectives to support their understanding of our class materials,” said Celis.

WGME/CBS 13’s Kim Block highlighted the effort as part of the station’s regular Making a Difference series.
