William R. Kenan Professor of Physics Thomas Baumgarte is on the look out for anyone interested in pursuing academic research in Germany.

It’s part of his new role as 2017-18 Research Ambassador on behalf of the German Academic Exchange Service, or DAAD to use its German initials. The organization is honoring twenty-one scholars across North America who have conducted long-term research projects in Germany at the doctoral level or above.

In a letter to Bowdoin President Clayton Rose, DAAD said the Research Ambassadors took part in a two-day seminar at the end of August, “addressing the latest developments in German higher education and research and the many generous funding programs available to North American scientists and academics interested in conducting research in Germany or initiating collaborative projects with German colleagues.”

Those academics are now back at their North American campuses, where the DAAD said they will act as liaisons to promote research opportunities in Germany.

Baumgarte, who was born in Germany, is an astrophysicist known, among other things, for his research on black holes.
