Off-Campus Study Guidelines

Get experience with environmental studies beyond Maine through Bowdoin's off-campus study program.

Overview

Environmental studies coordinate majors are encouraged to take advantage of off-campus study in order to gain a broader perspective on environmental issues through scientific field research or international environmental programs. The core environmental studies courses must be taken at Bowdoin (ENVS 1101, ENVS 2201, ENVS 2330, ENVS 2403, and the advanced seminar). Of the remaining three required courses, one can be taken at other institutions.

Approval

Students should consult with Eileen Sylvan Johnson, ES program manager, about their plans. Provisional approval in writing should be sought from the department in advance; a syllabus, reading list, and assignments should be submitted for final approval by the ES program director upon return.
