Gender; comparative study of families; intrafamily relationships and power; social demography, particularly feminist and critical demography; Asia (particularly East Asia and China); birth planning in China; Chinese/Chinese American experience in the United States, race/ethnicity in Hawai`i; public health.

Nancy Riley’s current projects include a multi-year project examining the historical and contemporary experience of Chinese in Hawai`i, using archival, observation, interview, and census data. She also is involved in another book project, on gender and reproduction.
