I am very sorry to share the news that former Bowdoin head football coach Howard “Howie” Vandersea died Wednesday, December 29, in Boston following a brief illness. He was eighty-one years old. Coach Vandersea, who led Bowdoin’s football program from 1984 to 1999, was born in Northbridge, Massachusetts, on September 12, 1941.
Charlotte Billingsley (2002–2022)

I write with profound sadness to inform you of the tragic death of Charlotte Billingsley, a member of our junior class who was killed the day after Christmas in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. Charlotte’s younger sister, Campbell, was severely injured in the accident but is expected to recover.
Mike Linkovich (1922–2022)

I write with the sad news that Mike Linkovich, retired head athletic trainer, two-time US Olympic team trainer, inductee both in the Bowdoin Athletic Hall of Honor and nationally at the Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame in Seattle, and a beloved member of the Bowdoin community, died Sunday morning at the age of 100.

I write with heartbreaking news. Last night, our student Omar Osman ’26 of Lewiston, Maine, died on the way to the hospital as paramedics and others attempted to assist him.

Michael Reed (1952–2022)

I am very sorry to write again today with sad news. Our friend and former colleague Michael Reed—who served as Bowdoin’s inaugural senior vice president for inclusion and diversity—died today, having succumbed to cancer while in hospice care in Pennsylvania. He was sixty-nine years old.
John C. Rensenbrink (1928–2022)

I am saddened to report that John C. Rensenbrink, professor of government emeritus, political activist, founder of both the Maine Green Party and the Green Party of the United States, and a figure highly respected and admired by generations of Bowdoin students, died on Saturday, July 30, 2022, just a month short of his ninety-fourth birthday.
