I am sorry to inform the Bowdoin community of the death of DeWitt John, Thomas F. Shannon Distinguished Lecturer in Environmental Studies Emeritus, on Tuesday, October 6, in Brunswick. DeWitt came to Bowdoin in 2000 with an exceptional record of scholarship and public policy on environmental issues. He directed the Environmental Studies Program from 2000 to 2008 and was a lecturer in environmental studies and government and legal studies until his retirement in 2014.
Karen T. Hughes (1949–2020)

I am very sorry to report the death of Trustee Emerita and Bowdoin parent Karen T. Hughes on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, in New York, after a difficult fight with mesothelioma. Karen led a life of service to others, and her positive energy and her years of dedication to the Parents Fund, the board of trustees, and the Bowdoin community have helped to make the College a stronger and more welcoming place.
Raymond S. Troubh '50, H'03 (1926–2020)

I write with the sad news that Overseer Emeritus Ray Troubh, of the Class of 1950, died in New York on Monday, August 24, 2020. Ray’s financial acumen and capacity to lead made him a legend in corporate America, and he served Bowdoin in many capacities, including as a member of the governing boards.

I am sorry to report that Helen B. Johnson, registrar emerita of the College, passed away on May 20, 2020, at the age of ninety-nine. As reported in the Portland Press Herald, “the cause was a life well lived and unrelated to COVID-19.”

I write to share the sad news that Barbara Kaster—Bowdoin’s Harrison King McCann Professor of Communication in the Department of English Emerita—died Saturday, May 9, in Destin, Florida, at the age of eighty-five. The cause of death was congestive heart failure and emphysema.
