Bowdoin Students and Grads Reap National Awards
Four Bowdoin students won Critical Language Scholarships from the U.S. Department of State, which wants to expand the number of Americans mastering “critical” foreign languages, those that are less commonly taught in schools but are essential for America’s engagement with the world. Sarah Bashir ’20, Ali Briere ’20, and Liam Nicoll ’18 are studying Arabic in Morocco and Oman this summer, and Gerlin Leu ’19 is studying Indonesian in Malang.
Eighteen students received U.S. Fulbright fellowships to teach or do research abroad. Additionally, Mohamed Nur ’19 has received a Truman Scholarship, Nevin Watson ’18 won a Watson Fellowship, and Sydney To ’19 was awarded a Beinecke Scholarship.
Other students earned a Boren Scholarship, the Austrian Government English Teaching Assistantship, the DAAD RISE Scholarship, the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme Award, National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, or the Princeton in Latin America fellowship.
