Inaugural Maine Jewish Hall of Fame Includes Bowdoin Alumni and Friends

The Maine Jewish Museum recently honored a number of prominent individuals by inducting them into a new Maine Jewish Hall of Fame. The Portland-based museum said it wants to “bestow recognition on outstanding Maine Jewish leaders who have brought distinction and honor to the State of Maine or beyond.”

Several people with Bowdoin connections were inducted, among them members of the Osher family, including cardiologist Harold Osher ’44 and his businessman brother Bernard, class of 1948, both of whom are also prominent philanthropists. Harold Osher attended the event to accept the honor on behalf of the family.

A number of deceased members of the Bowdoin community were also inducted, including: Joel Abromson ’60, a financial services professional and state lawmaker who sponsored legislation to prevent discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation; educator, author, and holocaust survivor Judith Isaacson G ’67; and Judge Louis Bernstein, class of 1922, a highly respected public servant and prominent figure in the Jewish community for many years.
