With the end of the semester drawing to a close, the BCMA would like to congratulate its three senior interns on their graduation and celebrate the next steps in their careers and education. It has been a pleasure to work with Eliza Nitzan, Eliza Goodpasture, and Julianna Burke. Their significant contributions to the BCMA and the community will be long-lasting. The entire team at the BCMA wishes them good luck in all of their future endeavors.
Eliza Nitzan, a Romance Languages and Literature major and a Visual Arts minor, worked as a Student Assistant to the Curator, conducting new research on the BCMA’s recent modern and contemporary acquisitions and assisting with the installation of Richard Pousette-Dart: Painting | Light | Space. Eliza’s research will be invaluable moving forward as the Museum incorporates these new acquisitions into exhibitions, academic programming, and class visits. “Working at the Museum of Art has given me the opportunity to learn about the internal mechanisms of a museum and all the background work necessary to keep it working and growing,” Eliza described. “One of the most exciting things about working at the BCMA,” she said, “is the contact I have been able to have with galleries and artists.” Eliza will continue to explore her interest in contemporary art this summer while she works at Sprüth Magers Gallery in London. Following her summer in London, Eliza plans to return home to São Paulo, Brazil, and continue to pursue a career in the art world.
Eliza Goodpasture, an Art History major and a Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies minor, worked as a Student Assistant to the Curator throughout the academic year, researching James Bowdoin III and eighteenth-century British house museum collections. Eliza’s research expands our understanding of Bowdoin and his notable art collection. In addition, Eliza researched and wrote wall labels for the exhibition To Instruct and Delight, European and American Art, 1500 to 1800. In the fall of 2018, Eliza will move to London, where she will begin her MA program in the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art.
Julianna Burke is a double major in Sociology and Francophone Studies who worked as an Education Assistant at the BCMA this year. In addition to leading tours, Julianna worked with her co-education assistant to develop monthly Family Saturday activities and to create innovative educational resources for the galleries. About her experience, Julianna said, “I am so grateful for the many opportunities that the BCMA provides for meaningful community connection and shared experience through art . . . I really appreciate BCMA’s concerted effort to engage with people of different ages, backgrounds, and artistic interests.” Julianna will complete the final semester of her senior year in Toulouse, France next fall, where she will participate in a program offered by Dickinson College. “I have learned so much from the staff here, all of whom have been so welcoming and kind to me and the fellow interns, challenging and engaging us to think deeply about the art and the concepts that surround us. I hope to bring much of the experience I’ve had here to a future career working with youth empowerment and artistic expression in the nonprofit sector.”
