Author, journalist, radio host, and trustee Alvin Hall ’74 has been honored by the New York Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ).
Hall and three of his colleagues won the Association’s Media Awards Competition in the radio feature category for a report that aired on WNYC’s The Takeaway, called “The Full Story: Alvin Hall Goes Back to School.”
The twenty-eight-minute piece follows Hall as he returns to his high school in Wakulla County, Florida, more than forty-five years after he graduated as the school’s first African-American valedictorian.
He last visited the place in 1976 and vowed never to return after he noticed that his photograph had been removed by the school administration.
Hall’s return to Wakulla High last year, at the invitation of the school, is described as a “small but important step in the struggle for racial justice in America.”
The NYABJ Media Awards Competition is held annually to recognize exemplary print, broadcast, and online coverage of people or issues related to African-American and African diaspora experiences.
