Sample Size: A Quick Look at Bowdoin Scientists

Meet the Scientist: Marine Biology and Biomechanics

Interested in hearing from some of Bowdoin’s scientists about their expertise? Wilder Nicholson ’16 has collaborated with Biology Department Chair Nat Wheelwright to create a series of brief videos that introduce a few of the department’s scientists to prospective biology students and others. As a bonus, the videos feature some of the areas in Maine where the professors conduct field research and take their classes.

Wheelwright, who is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Natural Sciences and Chair of the Bowdoin Biology Department, said he was inspired to launch the series after watching similar videos on the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s website. “I thought it was a great way to humanize what we teach and research,” he said.

The three videos feature Wheelwright, James R. & Helen Lee Billingsley Professor of Marine Biology Amy Johnson, and Assistant Professor of Biology Vlad Douhovnikoff.
