Bowdoin Sustainability, Bowdoin Dining, and Special Collections & Archives are celebrating Earth Day this year with outdoor yoga, live music, ice cream, free bike tune-ups, a display of earth-themed items from the past, and a feast made from local ingredients.
On Wednesday evening, Thorne Dining Hall served the annual Locavore dinner. Students enjoyed dishes such as Miso Maine Mushroom & Kelp Soup, Gulf of Maine Fish Chowder, and Maine Beef Cheeseburgers.
The following evening at Thorne, Bowdoin Sustainability highlighted sustainability metrics from the college’s dining operations and offered decorate-your-own-Earth-Day cupcakes. Students handed out small Earth chocolates to promote Earth Day the following day.
Earth Day, April 22, took place on the Quad with lawn games, student performances, and free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream served in compostable cups, with compostable spoons and napkins.
Special Collections & Archives, on the third floor of the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library, is also holding an open house from 3 p.m. to 5p.m. Monday, April 25, featuring items that document the earth sciences and Bowdoin’s place within the environmental movement. The display will include Parker Cleaveland’s meteorological journal (in which he records Brunswick’s weather every day for several years in the 1820s), and Kent Island maps and photos.
Saturday is Bowdoin’s annual Spring Service Day. More than 100 students will volunteer in the community to work on environmental projects.
