It has become a tradition for members of the Bowdoin Student Government to wake up early on the morning of the 9/11 anniversary and plant small American flags across Coe Quad. This year, the students worked in the rain, starting at 7 a.m. and finishing by 8:30 a.m. They posted 2,819 flags, one for each person who died in the attacks 14 years ago. They will remove them tonight.
Luke von Maur ’16, vice president of student affairs for Bowdoin Student Government, organized the commemoration. “We wanted to pay tribute to all who have been affected by 9/11 and to remember this day,” he said. He was six when the attacks occurred.
In addition, the College placed flags at the campus’s other 9/11 memorials, helping us to remember Christopher S. Gardner ’87, Frank J. Doyle ’85 and James Roux ’81, who all died in the attack.
