The Bowdoin College Endowment

The endowment transforms generosity into lasting impact, keeping our promise to open doors, expand opportunity, and sustain a Bowdoin education for generations.

As the College's largest and most enduring source of support, the endowment powers a transformative education for students of every background, fuels the work of faculty, and strengthens the campus community.

Built for today and tomorrow, the endowment is a perpetual resource that ensures that the promise of a Bowdoin education endures over generations.

More than invested capital, the endowment is a lasting commitment to Bowdoin’s mission: expanding access, fostering excellence, and sustaining the College’s pledge to meet the full demonstrated need of every admitted student.

Bowdoin’s endowment ranks among the top-performing endowments in the United States over the long term and plays an increasingly vital role in the College’s financial model.

Strong investment performance, sustainable spending practices, and the generosity of alumni, parents, and friends drive its growth. Because gifts to the endowment are invested, they compound over time, amplifying and carrying forward the intent of every donor and the value of every gift.

Endowment Impact

Bowdoin’s endowment is a permanent source of ongoing funding to the College. Cash distributions, approved by the Board of Trustees, provide the majority of the College’s operating budget.

Most notably, endowment distributions consistently exceed what Bowdoin collects in tuition and fees, and underwrite the vast majority of the College’s financial aid budget.

College Operating Budget Resources

The endowment supports over half of the operating budget of the College.

Endowment Distribution Uses

The endowment has not just preserved, but has grown purchasing power over the past twenty years, enabling Bowdoin to expand its ability to support the educational mission.

Endowment Spending Draw and Operational Budget Support

The total endowment spending over the past twenty fiscal years has been nearly $1.2 billion.

Portfolio Construction

The endowment’s investment portfolio is designed to generate returns that maintain and grow the purchasing power of the endowment net of spending and inflation over the long term. It is diversified across asset classes and geographies to maximize risk-adjusted returns.

Bowdoin invests exclusively through third-party firms, partnering with world-class managers who have discretion in selecting underlying securities. The endowment does not make direct investments in individual companies. This disciplined, long-term approach, combined with portfolio diversification and partnerships with top managers, has driven the endowment’s strong results and reflects Bowdoin’s commitment to responsible stewardship.
