On the heels of winning the best-documentary award at the Tribeca Film Festival, Monica & David, a film by Alexandra "Ali" Codina '00, makes its television debut October 14, 2010, on HBO.
Three years in the making, the film, Codina's first, follows the marriage of Monica (Codina's cousin) and David, two adults with Down syndrome. The opening scene shows the happy couple on their wedding day, a moment that was partially responsible for Codina's decision to make the film.
"Very few people seemed to understand the level of their commitment," she says. The idea of handicapped adults having a romantic life is often difficult for those who have never met someone with a disability. Codina says her goal for the film was to show viewers an "artful and entertaining story" that simultaneously breaks down stereotypes. Read Bowdoin magazine's 2008 profile of Codina.
