Two records, 25 years apart. Joan Benoit Samuelson ’79 crushed the Chicago Marathon in 1985 in 2:21:21, a record that would stand until 2003.
Sunday, the 53-year-old Olympic gold medalist and two-time Boston Marathon winner returned to the windy city to run the course in 2:47:50 — just shy of the 2:46:00 qualifying time she needed to enter the 2012 Olympic Marathon trials but good for a new American record in the women's 50-54 age group.
"I'm very pleased with my race today, given the conditions and the pressure I put on myself," she told Runner's World.
