Actor and native Mainer Patrick Dempsey, whose character Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd occasionally sports a Bowdoin T-shirt on the hit ABC show Grey's Anatomy, is back home this weekend.
He's hosting The Dempsey Challenge, an annual run/walk and cycling fundraiser in Lewiston/Auburn benefitting The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center.
During a public appearance at L.L. Bean in Freeport, Dempsey was presented a hat from his character's alma mater and graciously posed for a photo.
Dempsey says he's thrilled to have had the opportunity to wear a Bowdoin T-shirt a few times on the show.

The Bowdoin-Grey's Anatomy connection is the culmination of a two-year campaign to adopt Dr. Shepherd as a Bowdoin grad.
It was conceived and spearheaded by Cole Harris '78, who approached the College about the idea in the fall of 2006.
A petition signed by more than 450 students and other members of the Bowdoin community was delivered to the show's producers in early 2007.
