The Bowdoin College Board of Trustees elected a new chair as well as a new member, and approved the election of faculty, staff and trustees to emeritus status during its May 14 and 15, 2010, meetings on campus.
The board of trustees elected Stephen F. Gormley '72 Chair of the Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 2010. Gormley is co-founder and managing partner of Great Hill Partners, a Boston-based private equity investment firm.
A government major at Bowdoin, Gormley earned his M.B.A. at Columbia University. He has served on Bowdoin's Special Gifts Committee, been chairman of the board of Duro Communications and General Systems Solutions, and a director at Adams Business Media, Medical World Communications and Haights Cross Communications, among others.
Gormley and his wife, Lucinda, live in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Two of their daughters, Margaret and Katherine, are Bowdoin graduates, Class of 2006 and 2009, respectively; a third, Caroline, is a member of the Class of 2011. Gormley will succeed Peter M. Small '64, who will have served as chair from 2005 to 2010, and who was re-elected to a five-year term as trustee.
Arthur E. Black '91, of New York, N.Y., was elected to serve a five-year term on the board of trustees, also effective July 1. Black is a founding partner and director of client service for the investment management firm BBR Partners.
An economics and government and legal studies major, Black was on the dean's list and a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He went on to earn an M.B.A. at the University of Pennsylvania.
Black's prior service to the College includes roles as alumni fund director, BCAN advisor and class agent, and was a member of the Leadership Gift and President's Visiting committees.
In addition to Small, other trustees re-elected to serve another five-year term on the board, effective July 1, 2010, were David G. Brown '79, Michele G. Cyr '76, Jeff D. Emerson '70, Gregory E. Kerr '79, John F. McQuillan '87 and Paula M. Wardynski '79.
Two board retirees, Marijane Benner Browne '83 and Michael S. Cary '71, were elected to emeritus status in recognition of devoted service to Bowdoin.
The trustees elected James E. Ward Professor of Mathematics Emeritus in recognition of his dedication to the College. For her devoted service, Pauline M. Farr was elected Senior Financial Analyst Emerita. All emeritus appointments are effective July 1, 2010.
