Two For Tee, Bowdoin-Style

Story posted April 29, 2010

Bowdoin's tee times have been increasing in frequency of late. College T-shirts have cropped up in the media twice in the last month or so, in addition to several more in the past year.

As part of a lengthy profile in the May 3, 2010, issue of Fortune magazine, Jes Staley '79, college trustee and chief executive of the investment bank at JPMorgan Chase, is pictured running in Manhattan wearing a Bowdoin T-shirt. Read the article.

In the March 31 episode ("Sympathy for the Parents") of the hit ABC television series Grey's Anatomy, Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd sports a Bowdoin tee — and not for the first time — as sleepwear.

The Bowdoin-Grey's connection began as the result of a student petition and a lot of legwork by a Bowdoin alumnus. Read about the student petition and the two previous Bowdoin T-shirt appearances.

Earlier in the current television season, another popular television show, AMC's Mad Men, featured another Bowdoin T-shirt — this one worn by the character Suzanne Farrell as she jogged in the October 11, 2009, episode, "Wee Small Hours."

Mad Men, set in a Madison Avenue advertising agency in the early 1960s, has received critical acclaim, particularly for its historical authenticity and visual style, and has won multiple awards, including nine Emmys and three Golden Globes. Mad Men executive producer Matthew Weiner was a writer on another popular cable series, HBO's The Sopranos, which wove Bowdoin into an ongoing storyline. In June 2009, TV Guide ranked "College," the episode in which Meadow Soprano travels to Maine with her mobster father, Tony, to visit Bowdoin, Bates and Colby, the second-greatest episode in the history of television. Yet another T-shirt, this one included in the ABC News photo gallery, "Barack Obama Behind the Scenes," is worn by Richard Bland '95, director of federal government relations for the YMCA, as he plays basketball with the president at Camp David.
