California native Tiernan Cutler '11, having weathered a New England winter as a first-year, wanted to offer a helping hand to friends back home who would also be enrolling in colleges in the East.
The result was a college survival guide, complete with warm outerwear and footwear for every season. Cutler gave the one-page list to friends as a holiday present.
"I just wanted to help them have an easier transition to college than I did," said Cutler in The Sacamento Bee, Cutler's hometown newspaper.
The September 8, 2009, article, "Student's Guide Goes National," details how the list, which included Clorox disinfectant wipes, caught the attention of the company's marketing and public relations director, who turned Cutler's brainchild into an online marketing campaign that has taken root on social networking sites like Facebook. Cutler's idea gave rise to five college survival guides tailored to different regions around the U.S. View the East Coast edition here.
